Full bespoke garden design and project monitoring
Your garden needs to be bespoke to you, your needs and your aspirations. To achieve this, I follow a robust design process, based on building a deep understanding of what you want to achieve in your outdoor space. My service includes:
An initial visit at which I will talk you through the design process and what to expect; and at which we can discuss your tastes, your preferences, and your requirements for your garden. This will result in a design brief, and a fee proposal.
A detailed site analysis, based on a topographical survey of your garden (to be provided by you, or undertaken by a professional land surveyor), considering the history, context, character and conditions of the site.
A functional analysis, considering how different parts of the garden are to be used and how frequently, and how people will move through the garden at different times.
A conceptual design, setting out the key elements within the garden, how they relate to one another, and how the overall concept ties back to the design brief.
A masterplan, drawn to scale, setting out the layout of the garden, the location of specific features, the character of planted areas and the overall palette of materials; supported by a number of sections through the garden and sketches illustrating key views.
Detailed design plans, at a more granular scale, from which a landscape contractor can cost, set out, and build the garden. These will include technical construction drawings of specific features, setting out plans, and detailed specifications.
Planting plans, setting out the quantity, species, size and location of plants in the garden, supported by a schedule against which a nursery can cost and supply all required plants. Specifications for ground preparations will also be included.
Support in selecting a landscape contractor to build the garden.
Optional services
Once a landscape contractor has been selected, I can monitor the progress of the installation project for you, helping to ensure that what is delivered is true to the agreed design intent. I can also source and supply plants from nurseries, including inspecting the quality of deliveries; managing substitutions, returns and replacements; setting out on site; and monitoring planting. Finally, I can provide a programme of aftercare, including a maintenance plan, profiles of plants in the garden, and visits to the garden on a regular basis for several years to review how the design is performing and recommend enhancements.
Important considerations
Having your garden professionally designed is an expensive and time consuming undertaking, and one that should be carefully thought through before beginning. I strongly recommend that you go through the design process in detail, and read through the frequently asked questions on this site. My portfolio also provides examples of the level of detail and consideration applied to each project at each stage.
I am happy to come to your garden to discuss your project as a design consultation, for which I will charge a fee of £250.00
